Why should I convert my slides, prints or negatives to digital format?
Any form of film will deteriorate over time. With this technology, you can preserve your images without losing quality.
Should I get TIF or JPG Format? If you have no intention of modifying or cropping the image, then JPG would be the
choice. Another reason for JPG is that it is a much smaller file size than TIF. The downside to JPG is that each time you open the image and re-save it
you lose quality. TIF on the other hand is a bigger file and you can modify the image without losing quality.
What resolution should I use? You have to ask yourself what size you want to
print or display the image as. A printer can handle 300 DPI (dots per inch) and a computer monitor 75dpi. With that info, if you want an 8x10 print from
a negative, you would take the smaller size. In this case, 8 and multiply it by 300dpi, which says you should scan at 2400 dpi. If you wanted to display
a 4x5 image on a web page, you would take 4 multiplied by 75 which gives you 300dpi. If you are thinking of bringing the image into a photo editing
software, you may want to scan at the highest possible 4000dpi. You can always save it at a lower resolution but will lose quality if you save it to a higher quality. If the resolution you want is not listed on the Pricing page write me a not next to it with that request and I will do it for the closest price to that resolution. For example if you want 2200dpi I will charge you for 2000dpi.
Old Faded & Scratched Images? We can use color correction by Applied Science Fiction (Digital ROC) to get
back the color from old 35mm slides or negatives. We can also use their software that removes scratches and dust from 35mm slides or
negatives (Digital ICE).
If you prefer this to be done on your images, please select it on the order form.
What is a SlideShow? A SlideShow displays each image for 3 seconds (or whatever length you ask for) on the screen
then moves to the next image... Just like your old slide projector.
Do I need to take the slides out of my carousels? If you want a slideshow and they are in the order that you want them viewed then keep them in.
If I have existing digital images can you add them in the slide show? Sure, but it will be an additional charge of .20 cents for each image you have. Send them to me with your order on diskette, CD or DVD and tell me where in the slideshow they belong.
Can you name each image that you scan? If you separate them in groups of no less that 24 and we can start the name such as "1965 Florida" so the images in that group will be named "1965 Florida 001" "1965 Florida 002" and so on. We cannot give each image a unique name. You can always rename them later.
Can you add music to a slideshow? Yes, if you supply us with the original music CD. Calculate out the length of the slideshow by multiplying the number of images by the number of seconds to find out how many songs you need.
Should I put my slideshow on a CD or DVD?
The advantages of a CD is that you can run it on all computers that have a CD drive and the quality will be whatever resolution you requested and also depends on what your monitor can handle. The quality of a DVD is
640x720 (this resolution is only for the slideshow portion, you will still have the original image file with the resolution that you requested) and can run on your computer DVD drive or television DVD...but will only run on newer DVD players Click here
for DVD players that are compatible. The DVDs that we use are DVD-R.
Why a price difference between slides and negatives? More labor is involved with negatives than slides.
How do I pay? Either send a check made out to FilmToFile or click on the button for PayPay on my pricing page to pay with a credit card.
Do you send the slides or negs or prints overseas? Absolutely not, we do all our work in Redondo Beach, Ca. Either by myself or my co-worker. Some companies do bulk send multiple orders overseas but we do not.
Can you convert VHS to DVD? Yes we can. It is not on the price list but we charge $30.00 per tape.
